Infrastructure projects like bridge decks, highway tunnels, and underpasses must withstand continuous dynamic loads, vibrations, heavy traffic, and chemical exposure from deicing salts and soil chlorides. Tunnels are also subjected to high hydrostatic pressure from groundwater, where maintenance is extremely difficult.
Application Selection Guidance
For bridge decks under asphalt overlays, specify heavy-duty Geobit torch-applied SBS/APP modified bitumen membranes with mineral slating or high-build hybrid spray polyurea. These systems offer high tensile strength, puncture resistance, and withstand hot asphalt application (up to 160°C). For tunnels, deploy a dual system comprising pre-applied HDPE membranes and flexible PVC waterstops to handle high groundwater pressure and structure settling.
Install heavy-duty pre-applied HDPE membrane (Betoflex HPS) under raft slabs and blindside walls, or torch-apply 5mm thick SBS modified bitumen membranes (Betoflex 5S) engineered for extreme hydrostatic head pressure and dynamic structural movement.
Seal expansion joints, parapet flashings, and perimeter terminations with high-movement single-component polyurethane joint sealant (Betoseal 1PU, movement +/-25%) or 2-part polysulfide sealant (Betoseal PS PG).
Embed high-tensile extruded PVC waterstops (Betostop ICJ/ECJ/IEJ/EEJ) into concrete expansion and construction joints during pouring to stop high hydrostatic water ingress, and reinforce internal corners with fiberglass mesh (Betotec Mesh 65).
Install non-woven needle-punched polyester geotextile filter fabric (Betotec 120-1000 GSM) as a protective cushion and drainage filtration layer above waterproofing membranes and under ballast.
Apply 2-component flexible acrylic polymer-modified cementitious coating (Betoflex CM / CM 588) or liquid PU membrane (Betocoat PU) in two coats (1.5mm to 2.0mm DFT) across floors, extending minimum 150mm up vertical walls.
Apply cold-applied thixotropic rubberized bitumen emulsion (Betocoat RBE 1000/15/10) over basement retaining walls, footings, and substructures as a damp-proof chemical barrier against aggressive groundwater salts.
Spray pure elastomeric polyurea coating system (100% solids, rapid curing <10 seconds) for heavy-duty commercial roofs, bridge decks, and high-traffic deck applications.
