Rubberized Bitumen Emulsion Coatings
Rubberized bitumen emulsions are liquid-applied, cold-curing coatings designed to provide seamless damp-proofing and waterproofing barriers. Formulated by dispersing bitumen in water with elastomeric modifiers, these coatings dry to form a tough, flexible, and continuous membrane. They are widely specified for substructure damp-proofing, retaining walls, wet areas, and as vapor barriers under insulation, offering excellent adhesion to concrete without the risks associated with hot-applied bitumen.
Selection Guidance: How to Choose
Choose emulsions based on the degree of groundwater exposure and application method: Specify high-build rubberized emulsions for below-grade applications subject to light hydrostatic pressure or capillary moisture. For standard damp-proofing and vapor barriers, a standard SBS-modified emulsion is suitable. Assess substrate porosity to determine priming requirements (often diluted emulsion). Ensure the material has a high solids content to achieve the required dry film thickness (DFT) after curing.
Primary B2B Application Areas
Substructure damp-proofing and retaining walls
Vapor barriers under roofing insulation
Waterproofing of bathrooms and kitchens
Protection of concrete elements from groundwater chlorides
Specifier & Engineer Checklist
- Verify solids content (typically > 50-60% for waterproofing grades)
- Ensure low VOC formulation for safe indoor application in wet areas
- Specify required dry film thickness (DFT) based on expected water exposure
- Ensure concrete is dry and free of curing compounds before application
